The Foundation: A Guide to SW1's Three CHAI Skin Laundry Cleansers

Posted on October 14 2026

In the first post in this series, we made the case that a considered routine outperforms a crowded one, and that everything in a routine rests on a single step most people rush through: cleansing. This post is about that step specifically. SW1 Shop carries three CHAI Skin Laundry cleansers, each built for a different skin type, and understanding what separates them is the fastest way to fix a routine that is not working, before adding a single serum.

Why the foundation matters more than people think

A cleanser's job sounds simple: remove the day's oil, sunscreen, makeup and pollution. But how it does that determines what condition your skin is in for the other seventeen or eighteen hours it spends without a cleanser on it. A cleanser that strips too aggressively leaves the skin barrier compromised, and a compromised barrier lets moisture escape and irritants in. This shows up as tightness, redness, breakouts that will not resolve, or a general sensitivity that seems to appear from nowhere. A cleanser that is too gentle for oily or acne-prone skin, on the other hand, leaves residue and excess sebum behind, which contributes to congestion and breakouts of a different kind.

pH balance sits underneath both problems. Healthy skin sits at a mildly acidic pH, roughly 4.5 to 5.5, which supports the skin's natural microbiome and its ability to retain moisture. Many cleansers, particularly bar soaps and older foaming formulas, sit closer to a pH of 9 or 10, alkaline enough to disrupt that balance with every single wash. In Singapore, where humidity, heat and air conditioning already put skin through more daily stress than in cooler, drier climates, starting each day and ending each night with a pH-disrupting cleanser compounds the problem twice over. This is why every CHAI Skin Laundry formula was developed to cleanse thoroughly while staying close to skin's natural pH range, rather than trading barrier health for a squeaky clean feeling.

CHAI Skin Laundry I: 24K Gold Cleanser

The most broadly suited of the three, CHAI Skin Laundry I is formulated for all skin types, including sensitive and acne-prone skin, and is gentle enough for twice daily use. It removes makeup, excess oil and environmental impurities while keeping the skin's natural moisture balance intact, thanks to a pH-balanced formula that cleanses without the tight, stripped feeling that signals barrier disruption. If you are not sure which of the three cleansers is right for you, or if your skin type varies with the seasons, this is the sensible default: thorough enough to do the job, gentle enough not to overcorrect.

CHAI Skin Laundry II: Replenish Rose Gold Cleanser

This formula was developed specifically for sensitive, dry and compromised skin. At SW1, years spent treating patients with these skin types surfaced a common mistake: choosing a cleanser that leaves skin feeling "squeaky clean," a sensation that usually means the barrier has just been stripped of the lipids and moisture it needs to stay healthy. Replenish Rose Gold Cleanser is built around the opposite principle, cleansing thoroughly while actively supporting the barrier rather than working against it. If your skin regularly feels tight after washing, reacts easily to new products, or runs dry regardless of how much moisturiser you apply afterward, this is the cleanser worth switching to before changing anything else in your routine.

CHAI Skin Laundry III: Refresh Sapphire Cleanser

For oily, combination and acne-prone skin, the instinct is often to reach for the harshest cleanser available, on the theory that acne needs aggressive treatment. In clinical experience treating thousands of patients with these skin types, that instinct usually backfires. Harsh cleansers disrupt the barrier, which leads to dryness, irritation and, counterintuitively, an environment where breakouts are harder to resolve, not easier. Refresh Sapphire Cleanser was reformulated around this insight: gentle enough to protect the barrier, thorough enough to manage excess oil and congestion without over-stripping the skin in the process.

Choosing between the three

Skin type is the primary guide here, not preference for a particular gold tone. If your skin is generally balanced or shifts between combination and normal depending on the week, Skin Laundry I is the right starting point. If your skin runs sensitive, dry, or reactive, Skin Laundry II is built for exactly that profile. If you manage regular oiliness, congestion or breakouts, Skin Laundry III is formulated around that specific problem without resorting to the aggressive stripping that tends to make it worse. In each case, the goal of the foundation step stays the same: a clean, calm, correctly balanced base for whatever comes next.

That "whatever comes next" is the subject of our next post: the Micro Edit, a look at the specific actives, from retinol to vitamin C, that are worth adding once your foundation is doing its job properly.

Results may vary. Product formulations are developed under the supervision of SW1's physicians.
